We shouldn't need this tool, but we do, and it's awesome! (I'll explain) Have you ever tried to preview an offer's landing page only for it to say...'sorry my geo-targeting script doesn't like you, get out!'? Ok, it's a little more polite than that..and sometimes it just redirects you to some other site. What's happening with that? Well, the thing is, some offers are geared towards a specific country only. They don't want Canadians thinking they are able to take advantage of an offer geared towards UK residents for example. They employ a geo-targeting script which looks at your IP Address to determine where in the world you are. If you are in the wrong country you will be redirected to some Webfetti page or told that you don't qualify.
Promoting International Offers
I understand geo-targeting being employed...but what about for affiliates promoting an International offer? It's important for us to see the landing page of the offer so that we can evaluate it, check some keywords, look at the images, etc. That darn geo-targeting script should not kick in when we are previewing the page from the affiliate network. It should be turned off! One small variable in the URL could do the trick. I actually had one of my affiliate managers say she would send me a screen shot of the landing page in these situations. She was trying to be nice and I appreciate it, and that is better than nothing for sure but what a hassle and really, the screen shot wouldn't be enough. I need to look at the HTML, etc.
Proxy Servers
It is possible to use a proxy server to view a web site on your behalf. It appears to the web site's geo-targeting script that you are in the proper country and the page will be served to you! Problem is...most of the proxy sites are brutal looking and are splattered with ads and pop ups. The ads are often geared towards a more mature audience as well. But the 202-crew hooked us up! They created a Firefox toolbar that we could use to check out offers geared towards Canada, the UK, or the US. It works beautifully and fits nicely in the top of your browser and works just like the regular address bar. Best of all it's free and it doesn't store any data so your surfing is private.
Oh, and of course, if you are one of the few without Firefox, download it... :)
