Although this isn't the way it is for everything that I promote, I do try to keep up on the 'latest' of what's going on in the niches that I am part of and with the Internet being what it is, it is not at all difficult to do.
Here are some of the things that I do, and some of the web sites that make it easier for me, to keep up with the latest information circling my affiliate offerings:
- Take advantage of Google Alerts. Google Alerts is a free service that you can setup to receive emails whenever anything happens in your particular niche based on certain keywords. So, when Google crawls a page that contains your keyword you will be alerted at the time interval that you set. If I remember correctly, your time interval options are: as it happens, daily or weekly.
- Subscribe to the blogs of the merchants that you are an affiliate for. You'll get news on some of their latest offers, discounts, etc. To manage your blogs, a great free tool I use is BlogLines. I like the interface because it is similar to the email application that I use. You setup folders on the left side and anything new, when clicked on, will show up on the right. It's a simple, efficient, free way to keep up on the blogs in your niche.
- Signup to email newsletters from your merchants web sites or from the merchant through your affiliate network.
- Search Google News using a keyword that pertains to your niche. Subscribe to the blog feed for the results.
- Another great idea, if you are able to, is to be a customer. Buy the product. Pay for the service. Use it, break it, fix it. Know everything you can about it. It's not entirely necessary but it does have it's obvious advantages. The more that you know about it, the more you can write about it and the more advice that you can offer and questions that you will be able to answer. Anything that you ever see that has an affiliate link attached on this blog, for example, I have used and in most cases still use.
Obviously this information won't pertain to every project that you are doing. And you can certainly do well knowing nothing about the topic. A project using videos to direct traffic to an affiliate offer for example can be successful with zero knowledge on the topic. But, for at least one project, and for some long term income and to reap the most rewards, I really suggest that you learn as much as you can, setup a blog and tell the world what you know.
