Your Question Answered: Uploading Pictures To Use In Posts

Make Money Online

This question comes from my friend Joyce of Health-Is-Natural.com. She submitted the question in the Q&A section of the blog and here is my best attempt at answering it.

But first, I'd like to get something out of the way. I have received emails from 3 people now suggesting that I am insensitive by displaying ads for the "WordPress for Dummies" book in my posts that are discussing WordPress. My response? Ads should be relevant to your audience or what's the point. The book is definitely relevant for those that want to learn more about using WordPress. The 15+ sales of the book that happened so far in the short time it has been up attests to that. I realize that one of you was kidding but the other 2 definitely were not. No, I don't think of anyone as a Dummy, most of you I don't even know. I have purchased several of the Dummies series books myself to further my education. With that said, you will probably see the ad posted on every post that has anything to do with WordPress. I'm sorry if it offends you.

Now back to Joyce :) OK, I think that it is probably best I don't get into FTP'ing right now. I noticed in one of your comments that you mentioned that FTP is a foreign term for you. I respect that. I will go through the steps of getting your images into your posts using the built in WordPress uploader that exists in the Write Post and Write Page areas.

I wrote a post about a week ago explaining how to add images into your posts once they have been uploaded. That post will still have some value to you once you get the images on your server. Being that I've never used the WordPress uploader myself, I will be learning as I make this post. I will explain the steps as I go along.

Getting The Pictures To Your Computer

In most cases, to get your images to your server to use on your blog, they will be on your computer waiting to be uploaded. Getting them to your computer to begin with is another matter. I'm going to assume that you know how to locate images on your computer. I generally keep my working files on my desktop for easy access. Everyone is different. If I were to purchase the images from a photo exchange site I would download them to my desktop. If I were to create screenshots (using the free program Jing) I would have Jing save the file to my desktop. If I were to take images off of a digital camera I would drag them to the desktop. The rest of this post will assume you have some images on your desktop that you want to use in your post.

Using The Built-In WordPress Uploader

The WordPress uploader is located just underneath the box where you type the content for your post. I just created a screenshot of it using Jing and saved it to my desktop. Here are the steps I followed to get it into this post. As you see I inserted it just above the bold headline in this section.

  • Click the Browse... Button
  • Locate 'desktop' from the side or from the drop down box
  • Locate the file you want to upload and double-click it
  • Enter a title and description for the file
  • Click Upload
  • Click in the area of your post where you would like the image to end up
  • Choose your options. In this case I chose "Full Size" for Show: and "None" for Link to:
  • Click Send to editor >>
  • The image drops in place, bing bang, boom :)

Now you will have a Browse option that shows up next to Upload. That will show all of the uploaded images so you can insert them or edit them at any time.

To have text wrap around the image take a look at this post (same one that was referenced previously about adding images).

Best of luck. Thanks for the question Joyce...perhaps others will benefit as well.
