I’m from Canada… and recently I bought some dish soap from Nature Clean that happened to have a Canadian flag on it… and it occurred to me afterwards that what probably sold me on it was the flag.

Same can be (and in my testing, has been) true online. Now… it could be for different reasons… but a flag, or the “locality” of something, may “speak” to people in a way that makes them feel comfortable enough to click-thru and perhaps purchase (providing the offer is as promised).

The same night I bought the dish soap, I hopped online and implemented my geo-targeting script on one of my affiliate sites. One of the features of the the script/plugin allows me to dynamically display a country flag and/or country name of the person visiting my site.

In this case, besides the flag, I also included a message that stated… “Shipping directly to {country-name}!”. In this particular situation, I promote products from a raw food store that happens to ship worldwide (well, mostly) for 95%+ of their product line. I could have just as easily shown AdSense for the 2 or 3 countries that they don’t ship to, and shown the “shipping” message and flag to everyone else.

All in all this change took me 5 or 6 minutes to implement and my sales increased by 23% as a result (when comparing it against 400 visitors). I’m not suggesting that conversions will increase by this amount any time geo-targeting is used, but I am confident to say that click-thru rate WILL go up… that much should seem obvious.

Let’s run through a quick example using the WordPress plugin ( or script ) from the Geo Country Bundle…

A common use of the geo country scripts is to show different ads ( or other content ) in posts, pages, widgets and / or theme files based on the person’s country. The content can be in the form of text, html, javascript and / or php <--- even in posts and pages! See how here.

For example, say you are running an “acai berry” blog or site. You may have an offer / creative for the U.S. only which pays $37.00. You may also have another offer that caters to Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. which pays only $34.00. Before using this plugin, you may have opted for the second offer ( the $34.00 one ) so you didn’t miss out on the U.K. and Canadian traffic. However, the $3.00 extra you would get for the U.S. offer is very important to your bottom line, plus… what about all of the other countries visitors that may drop by? You can monetize that traffic as well with say… some Google AdSense.

So how do you display the correct offer to your visitor? Simple, you install the geo-targeting script ( or plugin ) and run some simple commands when using the script ( or use WordPress shortcodes when using the plugin ) to decide which ads to display. In English you’d say “If this visitor is from the U.S., show the $37.00 offer, if they are from Canada or the U.K. show the $34.00 offer, and if they are from anywhere else, show Google AdSense!”
