Quick WP 2.6 Upgrade Instructions For GoDaddy Users

Make Money Online

I just wanted to post some steps to upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress (version 2.6). If you want to watch a quick video first explaining some of the new features, click play on the video below:

Upgrade Wordpress

These steps apply to GoDaddy users and are hopefully easy, quick and painless.

First, you may want to do a quick backup. Secondly, download the Wordpress zip file (opens in new window).

Adjust the steps if your WP installation is anywhere other than the root folder.

  • Logout of the WP admin.
  • FTP the Wordpress zip file to the root of your domain.
  • Login to the Hosting Control Center on GoDaddy.
  • Go to Content -> File Manager.
  • Locate the file wordpress-2.6.zip and checkmark it and click "Unarchive" from the toolbar. Note: By default there will be a list of files in alphabetical order with only 25 files showing per page.
  • Click OK. The new Wordpress files will now be in a folder called "wordpress".
  • Go to the root of your installation and delete the "wp-admin" and "wp-includes" folders.
  • Go back to the FTP connection but leave the GoDaddy window open.
  • You may have to refresh the view in the FTP program. In FileZilla, to refresh, press F5.
  • Go to the newly created "wordpress" folder.
  • Move everything except for the "wp-content" folder to the root (or wherever your WP installation is). If it's in the root and you are using FileZilla, to move the files, simply highlight them and drag them to the folder labeled ".."
  • Go back to GoDaddy and remove the zip file and the "wordpress" folder. Note: All that should be left in the "wordpress" folder is the "wp-content" folder.

You'll see a message about upgrading your DB afterwards. Don't be alarmed. Just click on OK (or Yes or whatever it is) and allow the upgrade to happen. It only takes a couple of seconds.

The reason I use a combination of the GoDaddy File Manager and FileZilla.... With FileZilla it's really quick to upload the zip file. With the File Manager it's super fast to unzip it (rather than having to upload all of the unzipped files), plus it's quick to delete files and folders from within the File Manager. FileZilla makes it easy (and fast) to move files and folders.

Doing it entirely with FileZilla would take awhile, even on fast connections. Doing it this way, it takes me maybe 2 or 3 minutes.

The Dreaded 'Please Log-in Again' Message

If you didn't log yourself out of WP before following the steps above you may have troubles logging in after the upgrade. You will continue to get a message saying 'Please Log-in Again'. Your first instinct might be to change your password. Don't bother, it doesn't fix it. Just clear your cookies related to the particular domain that you are working with and you should be good to go.

    Hi Keith,

Thanks for the help in explaining the upgrade steps. I would definitely urge folks to use the GoDaddy File Manger. There are over 300+ files to upload if you try to upload them individually using an FTP client.

    Thanks!
