Google Trends Led Me To Higher Earnings – Part 1

Make Money Online

Of all the feeds that I subscribe to, my favourite, most active feed is the hourly feed for Google Trends. I use the data for a variety of reasons but I will share one example with you today (and provide the exact steps and every bit of info I could think of for you to duplicate it). I sometimes create some quick and dirty campaigns with a combination of tactics. In general, I could put something together in 1/2 hour if I don't feel like being a perfectionist and an hour if I do. I usually spend the hour though because I'm so picky about everything looking right. Some campaigns flop, meaning I hardly get any clicks on my ads and those that get lots of clicks, very often convert well. I've seen profits between $5.00 and $450.00 in a single afternoon using this method. The most I lost on a single campaign was in the ball park of $15.00. Some of the campaigns are still live and trickle in some dollars here in there, waiting for the spike again!

Landing Pages vs Direct Linking

For these campaigns, I sometimes direct link and I sometimes create a quick landing page. 9 times out of 10 the landing page is more profitable than direct linking. Direct linking is obviously a bit quicker to setup. Mostly the reason the landing page is more profitable though is because of quality score and I'm paying less per click. I'm pretty much always going the landing page route now unless I'm feeling lazy. I setup a general product review blog for this purpose and I use a post as my landing page.

Domain Names as Keywords

Ok, what I look for in Google Trends is searches for domain names. If you aren't aware, people often use the Google search engine or toolbar, whatever the case may be, as an address bar. Well, it's a great strategy to run some ads in front of these folks using the domain names as keywords in our campaigns.

A Potential Campaign Using Google Trends Data

I spotted a potential campaign for this tactic a couple of weeks ago (and about 200 since then). There are way too many for one person to do so I don't tackle everyone I see. I haven't developed a strategy yet to determine which ones may work and which may not. I just try them and wait and see what comes of it. It's quite fun actually. Back to the one from a couple weeks ago...I noticed a lot of searches for "nfl.com", "nfl draft.com" <- notice the space? and "draftnfl.com". There were probably more but I forget. I'm not a big fan of football but I suspect there was some sort of draft going on. What to do to make some loot?

You have to think outside the box, as they say, for this. You could go to NFL.com and see if they have an affiliate program. If they do and it's worth promoting, you could check the terms to see if you can use nfl.com and any variations as keywords. I wouldn't necessarily go this route though but it all depends on what the product or service the affiliate program at nfl.com is offering. For this, I would be more inclined to login to one of my affiliate network accounts and search for something free that relates to football. I'm guessing that these people are fans of football. I'm sure you can agree. I'm also guessing that they aren't necessarily in a buying frame of mind, they are probably just seeking out some news related to football. That's why a free offer might be a good one to try.

I took a quick look at the Hydra Affiliate Network and found an offer for an NFL Authentic Football Jersey. It's one of those CPA offers that pays on email submission. You get $1.20 per submission. It can still be profitable paying 10 or 15 cents a click, believe me, but you probably should try starting lower than that. See if you can start to get impressions for 4 or 5 cents. In most cases your keywords will have very little, if any, competition.

Alright, here's where the fun begins. If you continue on, I'll show how to generate an ad group loaded with every imaginable domain name variation (just because it wasn't in the Google Trends doesn't mean it hasn't been being searched). I'll show you what the landing page might look like and how to give your best attempt for a good Quality Score to keep your click costs down. In the case of the Jersey offer there is something a little extra we could do to improve the user experience and gain some long term customers...you'll see.

The key here is to act fast because it's tough to say how long the trend will last. It might be months, weeks, days, or even hours. If you have your mind wrapped around what to do and have all of your tools in place, after a couple practice runs I suspect you'll be a seasoned vet. It's not very hard and it's quite a bit of fun.

This post is way too long already to continue. I'll deal with the rest later today. Be sure to subscribe!
