Forget ShopZilla, Forget TTZMedia…Unless You Want To Earn 5 Cents A Year

Make Money Online

I was running ads for awhile for ShopZilla, TTZ Media and a couple others...(like Kontera)...etc. Granted my traffic wasn't explosive but those programs paid peanuts (for me at least). I forget what raking site I saw it on, but TTZ Media was ranked the worst program to make money online. I'm not trying to diss John Chow, the guy's a genius...but there weren't too many good things about TTZ in my opinion.

With ShopZilla and TTZ Media you can make money by putting ads onto your site that are related to some keywords that you type in. You then get paid per click.

I have done exponentially better using phpBay. I'm not saying that to get you to buy it. Use the free one if ya want. It's sooo easy to use and include ads into your blog posts and pages. I haven't figured out yet how to include it into the theme but I'll be looking more at that shortly.

A button gets added to the tool bar when writing a post (or page) and when clicked will add the code below. Change the values and you are good to go. It's that easy.

Then, if you want to configure phpBay even more, you can really get specific using the template below.

Remember, you are not getting paid per click, but these eBay listings are high converting. Even if your customer has an existing eBay account and you refer them you still get a commission. If they don't have an eBay account and they spend money...tack on $25.00 to your commission!.

Let me know if you agree that phpBay offers a decent alternative to the fore-mentioned programs. Almost anything can be found for sale on eBay....and it's time to squash the myth that some people still have...it's not just used stuff on eBay...not even close.

Stay tuned as I delve deeper into phpBay. I'll be getting into phpBay with geo-targeting and SEO. Go right to the phpBay products page and download the free version to try it out.

Dude, you seriously got me thinking about phpBay over here…it seems to have a lot of options that work very well within WordPress…

What is the difference between the free and paid version? I may have to check it out.

    Hey JK…

The free version works pretty much the same but you have less options for configuration. You can’t use negative keywords for example….so, you aren’t able to filter out the auctions that you don’t want shown. Also, you can’t display the auctions in columns…and you can’t specify a country on a per post basis….

But it’s still has high potential to earn some money right out of the box.

  3. JK Swopes Says:

Cool man, I tried out the free version. What is the syntax to use multiple keywords?

I am the business development manager here at Shopzilla – Keith, thanks for the feedback. We are constantly thinking of better ways to make the Shopzilla Publisher Program the ecommerce ad platform of choice for publishers. I’m sorry that you didn’t experience great success with our program. What type of site(s) were you running it on, and what ad units were you displaying?

In general, the Shopzilla Publisher Program will work best on product or shopping oriented sites/blogs. A visitor to a blog on affiliate marketing tips will probably not have much to gain from ads for the products available through Shopzilla (in my experience), which may be the reason that you didn’t have much success with the program.

To everyone else, I would strongly encourage you to try both Ebay’s affiliate program, as well as the Shopzilla Publisher Program (http://publisher.shopzilla.com) and determine what works best for you and your site. The benefit of Shopzilla is that you can incorporate product price comparison for millions of products from thousands of merchants.

At the end of the day, whether you are paid per click (like you would be from us), or a per action (like eBay), you need to look at how much you are making per 1,000 impressions.

I’d be interested in getting more feedback from people who’ve tried both. Keith, I’d be glad to work with you on optimizing your Shopzilla ad campaign if you’re interested in giving us a spin again.

JK….I’ve only used multiple keywords for the negative (or excluded) keywords, and for that you just separate them with spaces….give that a try and let me know if it works…if not, I’ll check the manual…I’ll have more time tomorrow…Good luck

@Christopher….thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Quote -> “A visitor to a blog on affiliate marketing tips will probably not have much to gain from ads for the products available through Shopzilla”

Yeah true enough…and good point. I probably didn’t give it a fair shake. I do feel though that what is paid per click for ShopZilla ads (and TTZ) is a very tiny amount and not worth sending a potential customer away for. But of course it does depend entirely on the business model.

….and I just may be lucky with the eBay auctions.

Can you show some examples of sites that do well with the ShopZilla program? (I understand if it goes against any terms and you are unable to but if you can that would be great)

  7. JK Swopes Says:

    @ Keith….

I emailed Wade, he said to use the multiple keywords you use the (or) which is | between each keyword or phrase. Thanks for the help…look forward to reading more from you

  8. Keith James Lock Says:

    @JK…ah, that’s how it’s done…cool…thanks man

  9. Christopher Calvi Says:

    Keith,

Thanks for the reply! There are thousands of sites out there using the Shopzilla Publisher Program. Darren Rouose at ProBlogger started using us in the past few months on his photography site (see http://www.problogger.net/archives/2008/06/04/how-i-make-money-blogging-top-income-streams-update/). GPSReview.net is using us to great success, and you can also find our ads on TVSnob.com.

These are just a few, of course. I’m definitely not saying it will work for everyone, but we do have a very high payout that many sites find quite lucrative.

In any case, I do thank you for having given us a try, and also for your feedback and engaging in a discussion with me. I am glad you were able to find a few good revenue streams that are working out solidly for you.

    Cheers,
    Chris

  11. Garry Conn Says:

Great post and very excellent of you to share this information. I also too had experiences very low income levels using ShopZilla. I wrote about my experience and Christopher was very quick to jump on the comments and provide some supportive suggestions.

All in all, I don’t know what to say. Some programs work while others don’t and ShopZilla is a program that I have fully tested on some very established sites of mine and it just doesn’t work. I am not being rude, I am just stating facts.

There are many programs that I try, consequently in trying programs you have to be willing to call a loss in sending them free traffic. For me, I finally gave up on Amazon.com after sending them over 25,000 clicks into their site and not making a dime in return for that.

25k in AdSense clicks would have been much better. Unfortunately, that is exactly what I gave up when trying both Amazon.com as well as ShopZilla in two different test runs. ShopZilla which it seems like a great program, just simply put, did not make money for me despite the fact that I sent them a ton of highly targeted and focused traffic.

Yeah same here really, aside from a few book sales I haven’t had many conversions with Amazon…not that the commission rate is very good anyways..
