Different Keywords for Different Uses

Make Money Online

A few days ago I put up a page about how I go about my keyword research using free tools. Since I'll be making reference to it every time I put up a new step by step project I decided to create a page that is accessible from the sidebar rather than a post that will become buried over time. This post is just to introduce the page and also an attempt at explaining where my keywords end up after my research.

There are keywords that I use in my content that I would never use in a cost-per-click campaign. When I am using keywords for content, whether it is an ad, an article, a page on a web site or a blog post, in most cases I try to optimize the content for one keyword that represents the overall theme. I also try to include many related keywords or synonyms throughout the content which I get by doing a tilde search in Google as explained on the Keyword Research page. When the related keywords are in the content it actually gives more power to the main keyword that I was optimizing my content for. When the content page is my landing page in a CPC campaign I would benefit from a better quality score as a result.

The reason that I do not include them in a CPC campaign is because I want my ad to contain the same base 1 or 2 keywords that were included in the search query. And since related keywords and synonyms are often different words altogether they will not fit well in my adgroup. They work great in my content because Google has come to expect them in relation to the main keyword. If this all seems a little confusing I've included an example below.

Adgroup keywords (and perhaps content) all containing the base keywords mac notebook:

  • mac notebook
  • mac notebooks
  • cheap mac notebooks
  • mac pro notebook
  • color mac notebooks
  • mac g4 notebook
  • mac notebook air
  • mac air notebook
  • new mac notebook
  • cheap mac notebook
  • g5 mac notebook

Content only keywords (words Google expects to see in relation to "mac"):

  • apple
  • imac
  • g4
  • macintosh
  • QuickTime
  • computer

Of course only use the related keywords if they make sense to your content. But there you have it, this is how I use the keywords that I find in hopes to have tighter CPC adgroups, better quality scores and better chances at getting organic traffic.
